General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

The European Commission officially ratified the final version of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on the 14th of April 2016. On April 27th 2016 the Official Journal of the European Union published the formal text. The reulagtion will enter into force in MAy 2016 and its provisions will be directly applicable in all member states as of 25th May 2018.
The aim of the new European Data Protection Regulation is to harmonise the current data protection laws in place across the EU member states. The fact that it is a “regulation” instead of a “directive” means it will be directly applicable to all EU member states without a need for national implementing legislation.
The GDPR will replace the current Directive (Directive 95/46/EC). This new legislation which is the biggest and most impactful change in privacy and data protection.
